Adding RSS Feeds to Your Blog

Filed Under (Blogging) by Ryan on 17-12-2008

Do you want to add RSS feeds to your blog?

Are you confused about how to do it?

This seems to be a common problem so I want to address it here and show you that it’s not difficult to add RSS to your websites.

This post is also dedicated to my friend Jeffrey Dibble who pointed out that many people are having trouble with this topic - You can check out his blog at JeffreyBlogOnline

So where do you start?

I always start at the FeedBurner website.  Follow these simple instructions and you’ll have your RSS set up in about 3 minutes.

1. At the FeedBurner website enter the URL of your blog and hit next.  You will be asked to enter your details to sign up. Once done, click “Activate feed”

2. You will see a success message and the link to your RSS feed, it will look like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/*YOUR_NAME*

3. In your FeedBurner account page click on Optimize tab and activate “SmartFeed”.  This will ensure your feed is compatible with most readers.

4. Next, under services in the left hand menu bar select “Chicklet Chooser”. I select the standard feed icon.

5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see your html code to copy and paste.  Before you do that, I usually change the part in the html code that says “Subscribe in a Reader” to something like “Subscribe to My Feed” this is totally up to you.  See picture below:

6. Log into your wordpress blog and (in version 2.7) choose appearance and then select widgets.  You want to add a next “Text” widget to the widget area you want your Rss feed to show - usually the top of your right sidebar.

7. Now copy and paste the html code from FeedBurner into this text widget, save and your done!

I hope that was clear and I hope it helps.  There are many more features of FeedBurner that you can include on your blog and most can be included by following much the same steps.  So go check out feed burner and all its cool features.

  2. Hi there,

Thank you for the info on RSS feeds, you broke it down nice and simply so I could understand it!

How are you doing on traffic? There are so many tip on everyones blogs thats definitely the best place to start!

    Best wishes,

  3. Hello my friend!
I`m taking a round trip to everyones blog to say hello.

I just got my site up and running after some trouble with my hosting company. All I had on the site got deleted, so I had to build my blog all over from scratch… but thats life. We`re all set now :)

It will be a long and interesting brainstorming session today!

By the way, have you added me to your blogroll?

Come over and leave your link at my new and fresh site :)

    All the best,

  4. Hey Ryan,

Good info on the RSS feeds. Did you check out my article in Garry Parke’s newsletter about RSS feeds. I recommended using FeedBurner too. It’s by far the best alternative to get your feed out in all the available formats.

I noticed that you didn’t mention anything about getting your RSS feed some exposure. Once you get it set up on FeedBruner, you should submit it to all the RSS feed directories you can.

I have put together a list of over 70 directories where you can submit your RSS feed, plus I did a video to show you the best way to submit your feeds.

Stop by the blog and check it out. I have added you to my blog roll.

  5. Hi Ryan,

    Fellow Alex Jeffreys student here!

I am doing a short promotional video, and would like to know if it’s ok to use a screenshot of your website?

Let me know. Just drop me at the email address above.

    Good luck!

  6. Hi Ryan,

Great post as people are always asking about rss feeds.

How’s your traffic plan coming along?!

I have put a post on my blog about traffic tactics that have worked for me so far. One of the best has been Squidoo. I only have one lens on there at present but it has been a high traffic source.

My youtube video has also had a lot of hits and driving traffic to my ppp. I haven’t used twiter to it’s full potential but the tweetmyblog plugin is very effective (details in my post).

Let me know what’s working for you!
    All the best
